Woodchester Mansion Project 2010/2011,

www.woodchestermansion.org.uk

I was privileged to undertake the ten weeks of heritage training project at the beautiful Gothic revival Woodchester Mansion in Gloucestershire, Together with other stonemasonry students of City of Bath College I was helping to repair this stone building while learning many new skills. I was working on the top elevation and part of our job was to take down one badly weathered, original "grotesque sculpture/ hanky punk, which we named Chester

From my very first visit, my eyes were set upon numerous wonderful gargoyles and grotesques adorning the roof tops and sides of the buildings and courtyard. I was delighted to be given an opportunity to carve a new sculpture, using Chester as a starting point , yet with enough room to excercise my artistic freedom. I understood that it was quite unlikely that my carving could replace the original, yet secretly hoped that it might. I took many photographs of the original piece and did a lot of research into the history of the building and had to use my imagination to be able to carve the new piece in the same spirit. During January and February, I worked on the piece in my studio at Blaise Castle, Bristol and named the finished creature Wooster.

In March 2011, at the end of our training project, the sculpture was presented to a Chairman of the Trust, Stephen Davis and was also covered by BBC Radio Gloucestershire and BBC TV points West. The best news however came at the end, it has been decided that Wooster will be allowed to replace the old and tired Chester after all.

On a very beautiful sunny day in April, with the help of my fellow student Rob Evans and the training stonemason Jonny Anderson we fixed Wooster on the top of the roof. Little celebration with wine and kind words from Hannah Jones ( mansion manager), Jane Davis ( National Heritage Training Academy) and Ray Canham ( webmaster ) rounded off a very enjoyable and exciting project
